This week’s crustal movement: Hokkaido

■M6: Japan Sea Eastern Margin Mobile Belt (NW offshore of Hokkaido – Niigata) *Caution until middle of Jan.

■M5: Eastern offshore of Hokkaido (seismic intensity – ) 

■M4: Northern Hokkaido (seismic intensity 3)

In the latest week, although crustal movement over 0.8cm was observed in “Horonobe, Nakagawa” of Northern Hokkaido, this movement is probably caused by the effect of the M4.6 quake on Nov.25.

This “Nov.25, M4.6” quake may be one of the foreshocks of M6 class earthquake in the Japan Sea Eastern Margin Mobile Belt area. There is a possibility of frequent around M4 earthquake occurrences around the “boundary where the Amur Plate and the Okhotsk Plate collide”.

In past data, M5 or more earthquakes have occurred after frequent micro earthquakes in the Japan Sea Eastern Margin Mobile Belt. This frequent occurrences of micro earthquakes are presumed to be the “prior indication of a M5 or more earthquake” caused by the large dislocation of the fault. Please stay alert for 2 months or so for a major earthquake.
